In Lyon, the 17th  and 18th  centuries were synonymous with urban development, growing fame and riots. The silk manufactured by the people of Lyon became famous throughout the whole of France. The Presqu’île (peninsula) district became the town centre, but the aftermath of the French Revolution considerably weakened Lyon's economic activity.

Following the grandeur and decadence of the Roman era, Lyon became liberated in the Middle Ages. The emergence of the Church conferred substantial responsibilities on the city, as its influence and territory grew.The city's development was closely linked to that of the Church. After emerging from the shadows in the 4th  century, the clergy became one of the three ruling orders in French society.

Founded on the banks of the Rhône and the Saône, surrounded by two hills (Fourvière and Croix-Rousse), Lyon was originally a place of refuge for the Celtic peoples and was known as Condate. Named Lugdunum by the Romans (probably coming from “Lug” the name of the God of the Sun), the next milestone in Lyon’s history was the arrival in 43 BC of Lucius Munatius Plancius with citizens chassed from Vienne. This colony consisted of merchants, soldiers and ferrymen organised in corporations.
